Burnout Prevention & Care

“Burnout occurs when the pressures of the external world and the unresolved places in our inner world disconnect us from the Source of life.”

2 Corinthians 4:1, 16-18
1. Burnout is a serious problem.

According to Barna Group research, 1 in 3 pastors is at high or medium risk of burnout. The demands of ministry leadership—long hours, emotional weight, relational complexity—create conditions where burnout is not a matter of if, but when, unless proactive steps are taken.

2. Most people are unaware that there is a problem until they hit a wall.
Hitting a wall

People in burnout often have difficulty functioning in everyday tasks. The gradual nature of burnout means that by the time you notice, you may already be deep into it. Recognizing the early warning signs is critical.

3. There are no easy fixes.

Burnout is complicated because there are usually multiple external and internal factors contributing to the situation. A vacation or sabbatical alone won’t fix it. Lasting recovery requires addressing both the outer pressures and the inner patterns that led to the breakdown.

4. You must address your inner issues for lasting change to occur.
Address inner issues

Inner issues are more difficult to identify and require changes in values, beliefs, roles, relationships and approaches to life and work. ‘Solutions’ take a long time to implement because we are making changes in habits and patterns of behaving that are automatic (Growing Intimacy with God retreat/group and Unfinished Business groups help you address some of these issues.)

5. Burning out once does not make you immune from a recurrence.

Burning out once doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. In fact, without intentional rest and healthy rhythms, you may be even more vulnerable to future burnout. Recovery requires more than just a break—it calls for ongoing soul care, support, and boundaries that protect your well-being and keep you connected to God’s sustaining presence.

6. Redirect your perspective to see this hindrance as an opportunity.
Opportunity for growth

Burning out is one of those ‘wall’ experiences that God allows us to go through. He does not mean it for harm but rather for good. If we cooperate, he will refine and transform us into the likeness of Christ. We will be better leaders and the churches and organizations we lead will be healthier.
